Drop Table Chiropractic Technique: What It Is and What to Expect

The drop table chiropractic technique is a gentle-leaning style of spinal adjusting that uses a padded table with sections that lower slightly during a quick, light thrust. This page explains how it works, how it has traditionally been approached, and how the right mobile chiropractor may help. It is education only, not medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.

What it is

Drop-table technique, sometimes called the Thompson technique, uses a treatment table built with segments, often under the pelvis, mid-back or upper back, that are set to drop a short distance. The chiropractor places their hands on a specific area and applies a quick, shallow thrust. The table section lowers at that moment.

The idea behind the drop is that the table gives a little as the thrust is applied. Because of this, the provider may use less force than in some other manual styles. Many people describe the approach as lighter, though experiences differ from person to person.

Some mobile chiropractors bring a portable table with drop-away sections to your home, workplace or care setting. Not every portable table has this feature, and not every chiropractor uses this technique. It is one option among several, alongside diversified adjusting, Activator and instrument-assisted methods, and soft tissue work.

How it’s traditionally been approached

Drop-table technique has traditionally been used by chiropractors who want a lower-force way to deliver a spinal adjustment. It has often been considered for people who find other styles uncomfortable, though a provider decides what fits after an evaluation.

In a typical setting, the chiropractor listens to your history, checks posture and movement, and may use hands-on assessment before choosing a technique. Many chiropractors combine methods in one visit, for example pairing a drop-table adjustment with soft tissue work.

Chiropractic care of this kind is generally aimed at the musculoskeletal system, such as joints, muscles and related nervous system function. It is not a replacement for medical care, and it is not presented as a treatment for diseases outside that area.

How the right mobile chiropractor may help

The right mobile chiropractor may help you understand which techniques are available and whether drop-table work could be a reasonable fit for you. A first visit generally includes questions about your health history, current concerns, and any past injuries, followed by a physical exam. No outcome can be promised.

Because the visit happens where you are, you may find it easier to talk through your daily routines, your workspace or your sleeping setup. A provider may also tell you if your situation calls for a referral to a physician or another professional.

Useful questions to ask: Are you a licensed Doctor of Chiropractic in my state? Which techniques do you use and why? What are the risks for my situation? How do you handle neck work? What happens if something does not feel right? How are fees and insurance handled? Confirm costs and coverage directly with the provider and your insurer.

The whole-person view

Body, mind and stress affect each other. Tension from long days, poor sleep or worry can show up as tight muscles, and physical discomfort can in turn wear on mood and focus. Looking at the whole person can be a helpful way to think about how you feel.

Some people pair hands-on care with other support. Somatic Experiences offers body-based approaches to stress, and Therapists.plus connects people with talk therapy. Every approach has its place, and what suits you is a personal choice made with qualified professionals.

Keep in mind

  • Adjustments to the neck (cervical manipulation) carry rare but serious risks, including arterial injury and stroke. Ask any provider how they approach the neck and whether it is needed for you.
  • Seek a physician or call 911, not a chiropractor, for red-flag symptoms: sudden severe headache, numbness or weakness spreading through a limb, loss of bladder or bowel control, vision changes, slurred speech, chest pain, or signs of fracture or infection.
  • Every mobile chiropractor should be a licensed Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) in good standing in the state where they practice. Verify the license with your state board before booking.
  • Licensed professionals should guide your care. In an emergency call 911; in an emotional crisis call or text 988. Insurance and cash-pay arrangements vary, so confirm them directly with the provider and your insurer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the drop table chiropractic technique?

The drop table chiropractic technique is a style of adjusting in which part of the treatment table lowers slightly as the chiropractor applies a quick, light thrust. The goal is to use less force than some other manual methods. Whether it suits you is something a licensed provider decides after an evaluation.

Does drop table chiropractic hurt?

Many people describe it as gentle, but experiences vary. Some feel mild soreness afterward, as with other manual care. Tell your chiropractor about any discomfort so they can adjust their approach, and report anything unusual.

Can a mobile chiropractor use drop-table technique at my home?

Some can, if they bring a portable table with drop-away sections. Not all mobile chiropractors carry one or use this technique. Ask when you book which methods they offer.

Is drop table technique safe?

Like any manual care, it carries some risk, and a provider should review your history before starting. Neck manipulation in particular carries rare but serious risks, including arterial injury and stroke. Ask your chiropractor about risks specific to you.

How is drop table different from diversified or Activator technique?

Diversified adjusting is typically done by hand with a quick thrust on a standard table, and Activator uses a small handheld instrument. Drop-table uses a table section that lowers during the thrust. Each is a general approach, and providers often blend methods.

How do I find a licensed mobile chiropractor who uses drop-table technique?

Browse the directory for mobile chiropractors and ask each one which techniques they use. Then verify that they hold a current Doctor of Chiropractic license with your state board. Confirm fees and insurance directly with the provider and your insurer.
